S61 Review

  Review Season 61

Radics Nandor, is Silenzio a topdivision-worthy team now in your opinion?

RN: Is it?? Of course it is, we won a Cup in division 1, how many established team with a full 22-roster can tell you that? We also grabbed the GC-jersey in Nederlandse, scored results in all sprintclassics that matter to us and our riders improved over the season by getting used to the fierce competition. We finished 17th in the ranking, with nine wins, 2830 points and two new palmares and we did not leave top50 for the entire season.

Congratulations, but it seems the well of results has stopped flowing now.

RN: Sometimes people seem to forget we are not in the place to stop building the team. At this point we have 14 riders that can perform on the highest level of competition, established teams have a team that is 50% larger, are fully equipped and can put all their funds in new riders. The current state of the squad means we sometimes have to sell and buy, which is detrimental for the motivation in the team. But we have done this before and in time the riders will be back at full strength, ready to roll. Right now we had a brief period with a lot of trading and a rest for most of our team.

You sound like another man Radics, it sounds like the rise of Silenzio has made you a confident man now.

RN: I don't know about that, but yes, we are proud. Ofcourse there were negatives. Our trainers were disappointed by the progress of our promissing youngsters to name one thing. Another thing being the performance of Gus for the team. He is the unsurpassed leader in the World Tour, yet after a promissing start of the season, he failed to impress. We need him to step up. One thing we will try to do is a bit less packed programme for our leadouts, so they will be a bit more in shape when they race.

What are your goals for the new season?

RN: That is something the manager will discuss with our riders first. But one thing we are looking forward to is competing in the FR-competiton. Gus would be an option to use in this, but he can't race all races. So we are glad that Pinhal, Viken and Agia can rotate captaincy, with Vallalpando as lieutenant. Probably Bertilsson and Fokkens will also play an important role to fill the final two positions in this squad, but we will look for further opportunities to build the FR-squad when we can.
